- HKEX Foundation presents HK$1 million donation to the Sports Legacy Scheme to promote sports among under-privileged families
Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) was pleased to host today (Thursday) a special Gong-strike ceremony in celebration of the achievements of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) and Hong Kong athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The ceremony welcomed Hong Kong Olympic athletes, including badminton mixed doubles pair Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet, as well as table tennis players Lee Ho-ching and Wong Chun-ting.
The event took place at HKEX Connect Hall, hosted by HKEX Chairman Carlson Tong and Chief Executive Officer Bonnie Y Chan. At the ceremony, Mr Tong, alongside SF&OC President Timothy Fok, struck the gong to close Hong Kong’s financial markets. SF&OC Honorary Secretary General Edgar Yang, Hong Kong Sports Institute Chief Executive Tony Choi, and representatives from beneficiary organisations were also in attendance.
HKEX Chairman, Carlson Tong, said: “HKEX is fully committed to supporting our communities by fostering the Olympian spirit in all of us. This summer, Hong Kong's athletes impressed the world with their incredible potential at the Paris Games. Their display of determination, passion, and endurance was truly inspiring. We celebrate not only their victories, but also their relentless pursuit of excellence. These values resonate deeply with HKEX. Congratulations to everyone involved in Hong Kong's remarkable success at this year's Olympics, as their triumphs are a beacon of pride for us all.”
HKEX Chief Executive Officer, Bonnie Y Chan, said: “As we strike the gong today, we not only honour the outstanding accomplishments of Hong Kong’s Olympic athletes, but also celebrate excellence, teamwork, and community spirit. These values resonate with HKEX and inspire us to continuously enhance our infrastructure, strengthening Hong Kong's role as a leading international financial centre. We hope that, by demonstrating our commitment to sports development in Hong Kong, we will inspire our youth to follow their passions, embracing the Olympic spirit to go faster, higher, and stronger – together.”
At the ceremony, HKEX Foundation presented a HK$1 million donation to the Sports Legacy Scheme to encourage sports participation among under-privileged youth, supporting them to pursue their passion for sports. The sponsorship will help fund an eight-month community sports programme, running from January to August 2025, where participants will be guided by professional athletes and participate in various sports. SF&OC’s Mr Fok received the donation cheque on behalf of the Sports Legacy Scheme.
The Sports Legacy Scheme was launched by SF&OC in 2012 and is a charitable institution under Section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance of Hong Kong. The Scheme supports participating professional athletes, who are planning to retire or have retired, to provide sports training to under-privileged students, spreading the positive values of sports and the Olympic spirit.
As HKEX’s dedicated charitable arm, HKEX Foundation aims to drive and inspire change by supporting community projects that address various social and environmental challenges, helping to address global issues at a local level. The foundation is funded by direct contributions from HKEX, as well as from private and corporate donations, and funds raised through HKEX’s Stock Code for Charity Scheme.
