Business Over Breakfast - Does Hong Kong Still Have What It Takes?
May 26, 2022

It has been a tumultuous time around the world since HKEX was last at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in 2020. Now, two years on and amid continuing geopolitical tensions and weak market sentiment, does Hong Kong still have what it takes to be a leading international financial centre?

A group of 20 CEOs, business and political leaders from across the world gathered together to discuss just that at a private breakfast hosted by HKEX on the fourth day of this year’s annual WEF meeting.

Hosted by HKEX Chairman Laura M Cha and CEO Nicolas Aguzin, the event explored some of the geopolitical tensions shaping our landscape, the changing dynamics in capital markets, and the unique role that Hong Kong plays in connecting East and West.

Given the challenging backdrop, it is our strongly held belief that more connections, not less, are needed at this time. As a superconnector between China and the world, Hong Kong, together with HKEX will continue to be very relevant in the year ahead, helping promote better connectivity and understanding between companies, countries and markets.

Hong Kong remains a very attractive market for international companies looking to list, as demonstrated by our strong pipeline of 170 applicants. It is a city of reinvention, and I am confident it will continue to reinvent itself and remain very relevant.
Nicolas Aguzin

HKEX was delighted to welcome former president of the UN Security Council and fellow at the National University of Singapore’s Asia Research Institute Kishore Mahbubani as a guest speaker. He shared fascinating insights into the changing global landscape, the outlook for the global economy, and his confidence for the future of Hong Kong.

The engaged audience took the opportunity to ask Kishore questions on a wide range of topics and take part in a lovely dialogue, offering everyone present a unique and informed lens on the Asian economy and markets, at a WEF meeting that has little East Asian representation this year. It was a great opportunity for HKEX to showcase its connectivity and highlight its role as a global superconnector.
