Wilfred is an expert in Asian equities and has over 30 years of experience in the asset management industry. He joined Hang Seng Investment Management (“HSVM”) in 2019 as a Director and Chief Investment Officer and is responsible for managing the Investment Management Department. His team manages active and indexing portfolios investing in equities and fixed income, across various investment vehicles including ETFs, unit trusts, MPF funds1, insurance portfolios and discretionary mandates, and includes the largest and first ETF listed in Hong Kong, the Tracker Fund of Hong Kong (2800 HK). His team also establishes responsible investment practices which include corporate stewardship and ESG research and integration. He is Chairman of the Front Office Management Committee (“FOMC”) and ESG Investment Review Committee (“ESG IRC”) and is a member of the Board of Directors of HSVM (“BOD”). Before joining HSVM, he was Chief Investment Officer, Asia, with Baring Asset Management (“Barings”), which he re-joined in 2011 to lead the Asian investment team to manage client portfolios ranging from Asian ex Japan equities, Asian fixed income, and Asian multi asset mandates. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Barings Asia and he worked closely with the teams in Baring’s London headquarters to strengthen the firm’s investment capabilities and to grow the Asian ex Japan equities products around the world.
Prior to re-joining Barings, he was with Mirae Asset Global Investments from 2007-2011, and held various senior leadership roles within the firm. In particular, he was Regional Chief Investment Officer, Asia Pacific, responsible for leading a team of over 30 investment professionals to manage Asian ex Japan regional/ country/ sector equities funds as well as Asian fixed income funds. He was also the lead portfolio manager of various flagship China funds and Asia ex Japan funds during his tenure at Mirae Asset.
Wilfred was with Barings for the first time during 2004-2007 as Head of Asian Equities and a country specialist on Hong Kong/China markets. Some of the key portfolios he managed include the Greater China Fund (GCH US), one of the most prestigious and earliest US-listed closed end funds to invest in the Greater China markets (launched in 1992), as well as the flagship Baring Asia High Alpha products including Baring Eastern Trust (UK onshore) and Baring Asia Growth Fund (Luxembourg offshore). The former won the Best Eastern Trust award in UK in 2006. He joined Barings from INVESCO Asia Limited where he worked from 1994 to 2004, leaving the firm as a senior fund manager of various Hong Kong/ China funds. He also managed global balanced mandates for Hong Kong pension fund clients (ORSO and MPF) as well as endowment funds and various institutional clients.
In recognition of his achievements in management, leadership, and expertise in the investment management industry, Wilfred received two CIO awards in 2024. He was honoured with Asia Asset Management’s Best of the Best Awards - CIO of the Year - Hong Kong, as well as with Insights & Mandate 2024 Professional Investment Awards - CIO of the Year - Equity - Hong Kong.
Wilfred graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor degree in Business Administration majoring in Accounting and Marketing, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (“CFA”).
